Wadham Shield

Middle Common Room

Dear Wadhamite,

On behalf of the Middle Common Room Committee and the entire MCR community, I would like to welcome you to Wadham and to the University of Oxford. The College is centrally located with the best of Oxford just outside its gates. Wadham is one of the most recent (a mere 400 years old) of the historical colleges. The beautiful 17th century buildings and large gardens give Wadham its traditional Oxford charm while its progressive atmosphere and modern facilities ensure it is perfect setting for graduate study in the 21st century. We have one of the most vibrant and diverse graduate communities. We hope that you will enjoy being a member of the Wadham MCR and take advantage of the many opportunities available to you.

In fact, you have come to Wadham at an exciting time. We are fortunate enough to be the custodians of the brand new McCall-MacBain Graduate Centre. With a graduate-only library, a comfortable lounge area, coffee machine, kitchen, and a state of the art media room, our Graduate Centre is the envy of other MCRs. We believe that the MCR, as a physical space and as a community, should exist to ensure graduate students extract the most value out of their time in Oxford.

The MCR Committee, working in cooperation with the Student Union and College, have prepared an exciting schedule of activities for Freshers’ Week. Designed to introduce you the workings of Oxford, Wadham, and the MCR, we have planned for exciting social events where you will meet other freshers at Wadham as well as returning graduates and undergraduates. Over the course of the year we also organise a range of events, from informal Sunday brunches to dinner exchanges with other Colleges, film nights to wine tastings, writing groups to talks.

If you have further questions pertaining to the MCR, do not hesitate to get in touch. We are also always looking for new members to get involved. If this appeals to you, please do email me.

We wish you success in your studies, hope you enjoy your time at Oxford, and look forward to welcoming you in person in Michaelmas Term.

With best regards,

Sarah-Beth Amos

MCR President
